Here’s a quick video I put together Friday afternoon to answer a question posed by one of my non-training friends. I had described to him some of the brutal and intense workouts I put myself through on a weekly basis and he couldn’t quite wrap his head around why anyone in their right mind would want to do that to themselves.
I’m sure you’ve all heard the phrase, “pain is weakness leaving the body.” Well, in my training for both me and my students, I’ve re-framed it. My version now says – “pain is weakness leaving the MIND.”
Our bodies are immensely capable of almost anything. It’s our minds, where the dark little gremlins of negative thoughts lurk –
This is too hard.
I can’t do this.
What am I crazy?
At my age?
I could get hurt.
I shouldn’t do this.
On and on they go projecting their poison of negativity and doubt into your mind. This is where weakness (and strength) start, in the mind.
I won’t spoil my answer to the question for you here, you’ll have to watch the video to find out what I said. Enjoy!

[…] Needless to say I began my challenge with the intent of finishing well before the end of the day. I knew there were easier ways to accomplish the 500 reps, for example to break it up into very small, manageable sets and spread them far throughout the day. But this was a mental toughness challenge, not just a goal of reaching 500 by any meas necessary. So I took the hard road. If you want to know why I do that, check out my post – Why Do You Do That?
