Quit or Destroy

When faced with a seemingly insurmountable obstacle in life, you really have only 2 options – go forward or go backward.  Backward is to quit, to give up, to walk away.  Backward is not a viable option unless you don’t mind living with regret.  But regret is a pain that does not go away.  It haunts you forever.  It’s like dying a little bit each day, over and over again for the rest of your life.  No thanks.  Not for me.  Pass.

I’ll take the only other option available – go forward.  Destroy the obstacle.

Yes it’s true that sometimes you can go around it, or over it, or under it, depending on the size of the obstacle in your path.  But sometimes the obstacle looms so large in front of you that it dwarfs you.  Sometimes it’s so vast and insurmountable that it must be eradicated in order to move forward.  Be destroyed.  Torn down.  Gone through.

Destroying the obstacle requires discipline.  It requires courage.  It requires ridiculously large amounts of intestinal fortitude and strength.  But when there’s no other way around, ya gotta go through.

Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you that going forward is not without it’s own version of pain as well.  Like regret, continuing forward will cause you severe pain as well.  The bigger the obstacle, the more intense the pain associated with going through it.  But this pain is temporary.  This pain may be unlike anything you’ve ever felt, but it has an end point.  Once you push through the obstacle, it stops.  There’s nothing like the successful completion of your goal to alleviate all the pain associated with going forward.

So go – climb your mountain.  Run your race.  Live your dream.  You have nothing to lose but the little bit of daily dying that is regret.
